Cedar rapids schools name tara thomas gettman communications director

The Cedar Rapids Community School District has selected Tara Thomas Gettman as its new director of strategic communications.

Gettman previously served as director of strategic communications for the City of Waterloo and director of school and community relations for Waterloo Community Schools, the district announced. She holds a Bachelor of Science in journalism from Boston University and a master’s degree in strategic communication from the University of Iowa.

Superintendent Dr. Tawana Lannin said the hire brings someone with deep roots in Eastern Iowa who has used transparent communication to engage communities and build trust.

“I’ve experienced firsthand the important role public schools play in shaping students, strengthening families, and building vibrant communities,” Gettman said in the announcement. “I am incredibly honored to join a district with such a strong commitment to helping students discover their passions, prepare for the future, and achieve their best.”

The selection was announced July 15, 2026. For Cedar Rapids and Linn County families, the role oversees district messaging and public information that reaches CRCSD staff, students and households.
