Linn-Mar's Davis Kern named All-Metro boys basketball player of the year

The Gazette announced its 2024-25 All-Metro boys’ basketball team on April 11, selected by the seven head coaches in Cedar Rapids and Marion.

Davis Kern, a 6-9 senior at Linn-Mar, was named Player of the Year. The Gazette article noted Kern averaged 22.9 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, signed with South Dakota State and passed Marcus Paige as the metro’s all-time leading scorer.

Chris Robertson of Linn-Mar earned Coach of the Year honors. The Gazette article said his team went undefeated in the Mississippi Valley Conference, finished No. 2 in the IHSAA rankings and reached the Class 4A state tournament.

First-team selections include Davis Kern (Linn-Mar sr), Trey McKowen (CR Kennedy sr), Reuben Schlaak (CR Kennedy sr), Payson Nietert (Linn-Mar sr), Mason Matson (Linn-Mar sr), Kaleb Wilgenbusch (CR Xavier sr) and Austin Joens (CR Prairie jr). Only Kern and McKowen were unanimous.

Second-team honorees are Landon Deiters (CR Kennedy sr), Zander Murray (CR Xavier jr), Austin Goodrich (Marion sr), Khai Gatewood (CR Jefferson sr), David Fason (CR Prairie jr), A.J. Evans (CR Xavier jr) and Traeshon Fields (CR Washington fr).

The announcement gives Cedar Rapids and Linn County fans a season-end look at standout players from Linn-Mar, CR Kennedy, Xavier, Prairie, Marion, Jefferson and Washington.
