One thousand faces, one Cedar Rapids image: America 250 mosaic grows at farmers market

Organizers building a community mosaic for the America 250 celebration are roughly halfway through a summer of portrait sessions at the Downtown Cedar Rapids Farmers Market, with the next chance to participate coming Aug. 1.

The mosaic will stitch together approximately 1,000 individual photos into a single large-scale image that celebrates Cedar Rapids. Once finished, the piece is slated for a prominent downtown display.

On July 18, organizers with the America 250 celebration set up at the market to photograph visitors. They will return Aug. 1 during a back-to-school resource fair at the same location, continuing toward the 1,000-portrait target.

The effort is part of a year-long series of local events marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The specific number of portraits gathered so far and the final installation site have not been disclosed.
